Literature Circle: Holes by Louis Sachar
(ages 9-11) 9-10:15 AM Instructor: Lisa Chinitz
Service Description
Ignite your love for literature this fall with Holes! Join our literature circle as we have conversations about what we read, hone in on our critical thinking skills, make inferences and predictions, and dissect character dynamic and conflict resolution. We will make connections between the book(s) we read and our own lives, whether it be our own experiences, within other books we’ve read, something we’ve seen on the news or in the media, or maybe something we have heard about in our communities. Students will take on roles during our group conversation-summarizer, questioner (discussion director), connector, illustrator, word wizard (vocabulary identification/ deciphering word meaning through context). These roles divide up all the things good readers do when they engage with texts. The more we practice, the deeper their understanding, the more well- rounded their perspectives, the more they fall in love with literature. The semester will also incorporate activities/ projects based on the novels we’ve read, discussions we’ve had, and skills we’ve gained throughout. Students will read at home and in class (on a volunteer basis). Students may use audiobooks to support their reading. The main challenge is to come to class prepared to discuss and participate in activities and conversation.
