Lit Circle: Hatchet by Gary Paulsen
(age 12-15) 9- 10:15AM Instructor: Valerie Miles
Service Description
In this session of Literature Circle, students will embark on an unforgettable adventure through Gary Paulsen’s Hatchet—a powerful story of resilience, courage, and self-discovery. Together, we’ll journey alongside thirteen-year-old Brian Robeson as he learns to survive in the Canadian wilderness. Each week, students will take on rotating Literature Circle roles—Discussion Director, Connector, Vocabulary Master, and Summarizer—encouraging leadership, collaboration, and deep comprehension. Through these roles, learners will practice thoughtful conversation techniques such as asking clarifying questions, building on one another’s ideas, and respectfully sharing differing perspectives. Each weekly session will conclude with a creative extension activity—a fun, artistic outlet designed to spark imagination and self-expression. Join us as we dive into Hatchet—a story that reminds us of the strength we find within ourselves when faced with the unknown.
