Brick by Brick: Poetry and Grammar
(age 9-12) 10:30-11:45 AM Instructor: Michelle Sledge
Service Description
Calling all Lego lovers! Bring your inner architect and storytelling imagination to this poetry and grammar class. In this class students will use their Lego builds, teacher selected samples of poetry, and grammar instruction as the bases for their own storytelling and writing. Everyone will work Brick by Brick through the poetry writing process as we learn about different kinds of poems (free verse, sonnet, haiku, etc.) and different poetry elements (including but not limited to lines, stanzas, rhyme, meter). We will also focus on basic and intermediate grammar instruction while highlighting the difference between standard grammar rules for writing, compared to breakable rules within poetry. We will challenge ourselves to leave behind some of the traditional rules and writing expectations, as we embark on a poetic journey through the semester. Students will bring home their journals at the end of the semester, which will encompass a collection grammar related notes, weekly drawings, and self-written poems.
